June 10 - Senior Voice!
held an expanded meeting and information
session which was attended OARA
activists from Toledo Columbus, Ashtabula as
well as coalition leaders from the
immediate vicinity of Cleveland. This forum
was developed as a way to expand the
participation in the Community Advocacy
Network in northern Ohio and prepare
presenters with a new Medicare and Social
Security Issues At Stake
presentation.
June 13 - President
Friesner was invited to the Ohio Seniors
meet with Barak Obama event Dave reports it
was a small event of 40 people. The
candidate spoke for 20 minutes and answered
direct questions for about another hour.
Senator Obama was aware John McCain waffled on
a Social Security private
accounts question asked by New Hampshire ARA
president John Mendolusky the
previous day. Dave reports Senator Obama was
forthright and direct and made clear
his position to increase financing of Social
Security by taxing earning over $250,000
and his disagreement with the concept of
private accounts set aside in Social
Security.
June 14-16-19-25 - Ohio
Alliance for Retired Americans activists
participated in public demonstrations to
protest the spike in gasoline prices as it
moved
over $4.00 a gallon. OARA members in Sandusky,
Mansfield, Marietta, and Dayton
held signs about facing tough choices Food /
Medicine / Doctors or fuel and the
increasing cost of living while seeing income
savings and the economy
decline.
June 19 and 26 - The Alliance
of Informed Citizens of NW Ohio met
and set September 19 as the next public forum
date for Informed Citizens Listen. The
group is firming up plans for this morning
long event. The primary topic will focus on
legal issues confronting retirees and seniors.
Current plans include local presenters
from the Elder Justice Project and Advocates
for Basic Legal Equality and look for a
return visit from State of Ohio Treasurer
Richard Cordray.
June 23 Central -
Ohio CLC Retirees elect a new slate of
officers headed by Barb Davis. Barb is a
retired member of United Food and Commercial
Workers Local 1059. She served for a
number of years as labor representative at
United Way in Franklin County. She is a
dedicated volunteer with the Franklin County
Diabetes Association. Her first act in
office was to participate in a delegation of
labor leaders meeting with Ohio US Senator
Sherrod Brown on issue confronting
Ohioans.
June 25 and 30 - OARA zone
coordinators get radio airtime to discuss
retirement security. Bruce Bostick the zone
coordinator in Central Ohio was interviewed on
Columbus radio station WCRS, 98.3 &
102.1 Wednesday June 25 from 4:30-5:00. Dan
Fonte our zone coordinator in the
Canton Akron area again appeared on the WHBC
1480 Ron Ponder show Monday
June 30 to explain about the Bush Legacy Tour
Bus and the Americans United for
Change and what it was all about. Dan had been
the primary spokesperson on the
tours stop in Canton Saturday June 28th.
